The lost art of idleness

Hello <3 I am writing this after a busy and very fulfilling day, where you put your feet up and feel tired but the good kind of tired. I’m excited to share this one as it’s been percolating in my brain all week.

In December, I (finally) got myself a library card. The impetus for this was a desire to a) read about something new and be inspired and b) get off my phone in the process. So I went and registered my card, got my login info (system has had a major upgrade since my stint working in a library when I was 19), and I went to peruse the design section and picked out a beautiful Kinfolk coffee table book. Since then, I have been carving out little micro moments in my week — sometimes it’s 10 minutes, other times 30+, and I sit down and take in its contents. It’s a mix of essays, interviews and photos of peoples’ beautiful homes around the world. I got it because I thought I would use it as design inspiration for sharpening my eye for what I love when it comes to keeping a home, but I’ve been surprised that the real pull to keep opening its pages is the essays. The one that really stuck with me recently was a short story on idleness, specifically the lost art of it.
